Tucked away in the quiet, tree-lined streets of São Domingos, Niterói, lies one of Brazil’s most captivating cultural landmarks — the Solar do Jambeiro. This elegant 19th-century mansion is a masterpiece of colonial architecture, a hub for cultural events, and — as whispered among locals — one of the most haunted buildings in Rio de Janeiro.

The Haunted History of Solar do Jambeiro

Built in 1872 by Portuguese aristocrat Bento Joaquim Alves Pereira, the mansion was a lavish family residence, later sold to Georg Christian Bartholdy, a Danish consul, whose family inhabited the space for decades. Despite the grand façade and peaceful gardens filled with jambeiro trees, many believe that the building absorbed the emotional energy of its past inhabitants.

What Visitors and Staff Have Reported

Over the years, multiple staff members and visitors have reported eerie experiences inside the house. Here are some of the most frequently mentioned phenomena:

Footsteps in the Empty Solar do Jambeiro Hallways

Many who work in or tour the building claim to hear distinct footsteps, particularly on the wooden upper floors, even when no one is there. The sound of heels walking across creaky boards is often followed by a sudden silence, as if the spirit has vanished mid-stride.

Phantom Piano Music

Several visitors have sworn they heard piano music coming from the music room, only to find the space empty and the piano untouched. Staff members have reportedly locked the piano room, only to return later and find the door open and a single key pressed down.

Paranormal Investigator’s Log: My Spiritual Sensing at Solar do Jambeiro

As a paranormal investigator and sensitive, few places have called to me as strongly as the Solar do Jambeiro. Born in São Francisco, just a short walk from São Domingos, I grew up hearing whispered tales about this elegant 19th-century mansion — stories of strange shadows, music in the night, and a presence that lingers long after closing time.

For years, I had felt the pull of the Solar. Its towering ceilings, weathered wooden floors, and air of quiet sadness had always sparked my curiosity. But it wasn’t until my recent visit that I was able to conduct a paranormal energy assessment, bringing my skills as both an investigator and a spiritual intuitive to the location. And what I encountered there was more than just ambiance — it was a genuine spiritual presence.

An Energetic Scan of Each Room: A Layered History

As I entered the house, I immediately began tuning into the energy of each space. There was a distinct layering of emotional frequencies — happiness, sorrow, loss, love — each room carried a different energetic residue. Some areas felt light and welcoming, while others felt heavy, like a long-held breath.

But it was in the room with the piano, near one of the windows, that I encountered something unmistakable.

The Guardian of the Solar

I felt the presence of a middle-aged woman, with a strong emotional presence. She didn’t feel malevolent — rather, she felt protective, even territorial. She lingers in the space as if it’s hers. I stood near the window and felt her energy so clearly, it was as if time folded in on itself.

She watches. She waits. But not in sorrow — she guards the home like one would guard a memory too precious to let go.

I believe she may be connected to the original family who once lived there — perhaps a woman of the house, or someone who died there with deep emotional ties to the property.

The Patio and the Washrooms: An Unspoken Darkness

While the piano room had a spiritual intensity, it was the patio area, especially near the old washrooms, that hit me the hardest.

There’s something there — something that doesn’t feel like the rest of the house. The energy is darker, heavier, and more fractured. It’s as if a traumatic event occurred there, one that may never have been officially recorded or acknowledged. I couldn’t shake the feeling of fear and desperation, like someone had tried to escape or hide, only to meet a tragic end.

I usually get clear emotional impressions, but this one was fragmented — possibly buried deep or repressed by time, making it harder to read. Yet the energy remains, clinging to the corners of that space like mist.

To My Surprise, I Spotted Two Distinct Figures by the Front Windows in a Photograph

While reviewing the videos and photos I took during my visit to Solar do Jambeiro, I made a chilling discovery. As I zoomed in on one of the images of the mansion’s exterior, I noticed two ghostly figures near two of the downstairs windows.

One appears to be a woman dressed in a vintage 19th-century gown, her outline faint but unmistakable, standing as if quietly observing us from inside. On the other window, is the spectral face of a child — only the head is visible, with wide, haunting eyes gazing outward.

What Comes Next: A Full Paranormal Investigation Awaits

This first visit was just an assessment, a gentle tuning into the subtle frequencies of Solar do Jambeiro. But what I found has only deepened my desire to return. We are looking into a full paranormal investigation in there.

What excites me most is the opportunity to communicate with this female guardian spirit, to understand her story, and to perhaps bring closure or acknowledgment to whatever happened near the washroom patio.

I believe that the Solar do Jambeiro still holds secrets — and we are on the verge of uncovering them.

Respecting the Spirit of the Solar do Jambeiro

As always, our approach is grounded in respect, curiosity, and compassion — for the living, the dead, and the land itself. The hauntings at Solar do Jambeiro aren’t just ghost stories. They’re echoes of history, pieces of human experience that refuse to be forgotten.

And I, for one, am honored to listen.
